2016-06-27 11:33:05 SylvieMobile Hey everyone, I just learned about AsteroidOS and I'm very interested. It seems like a great little system, but there are a few things I'm curious about 2016-06-27 11:33:51 SylvieMobile First off, I'm wondering if I understood correctly that the system is basically completely libre, aside from drivers used from Android. Kinda like if you'd run Fedora on a regular desktop? 2016-06-27 11:34:49 SylvieMobile Secondly, is there any way to integrate with Android at all? https://github.com/AsteroidOS/asteroid/wiki/Bluetooth claims that Bluetooth isn't fully supported, but on Twitter it seems that it /may/ work and an Android app is in development. It feels like I should assume "Maybe in the future if all goes well but currently not"? 2016-06-27 11:35:20 SylvieMobile On the note of the Android app, are there any plans to release it on F-Droid? :) 2016-06-27 11:42:15 @kido hi SylvieMobile ! 2016-06-27 11:42:44 @kido indeed everything is opensource and built from source except the GPU driver and bluetooth firmware 2016-06-27 11:43:19 @kido for bluetooth the wiki isn't up to date it's further than what's written 2016-06-27 11:44:17 @kido however the bluetooth features are largely in development 2016-06-27 11:45:27 @kido if you want to help in the development you can try to build everything and make it work but if you just want to test or use it, it's not ready yet 2016-06-27 11:47:35 SylvieMobile I'm not sure if I want to help development. It's mostly a time and feeling like it thing. I do absolutely love QML and have worked with that before at least, it could be a fun toy to mess around with and see if I can get anything done. How should I interpret "It's not ready yet"? As in, "it doesn't do a lot at the moment" or "it's an utterly broken 2016-06-27 11:47:35 SylvieMobile constantly crashing mess"? There's a huge difference between those. I can deal with little functionality just fine :) 2016-06-27 11:48:52 SylvieMobile I'm kinda debating with myself if I'll buy a compatible smartwatch. As long as it can show the time without crashing all the time it's good enough for me, although I would like some connection with my phone later on, which sounds like a "possibly in the future, help would be great or be prepared to wait long" thing? 2016-06-27 11:55:30 @kido of course I understand that you can lack time, but even a new user of asteroid is largely welcome and a great pleasure for me :) furthermore, if you know QML well enough you can tweak your watch and improve the apps whenever you feel like it 2016-06-27 11:55:52 @kido and no asteroid doesn't crash often at all 2016-06-27 11:57:07 @kido it just lacks features that are in development when I get time for it. for example, I have a bluetooth protocol in mind but the current code implements a proof of concept of the capabilities, not anything near the protocol I thought about 2016-06-27 11:58:49 @kido if you buy a watch to use asteroid you can ask Asara and TheAppleMan how it feels, I think they use it on a ~daily basis 2016-06-27 12:01:11 SylvieMobile Sure, I'd love to hear it from one of them. If they're positive I'll likely give it a try. I've always wanted to try a smartwatch but I'm sick of all those big providers filling it with proprietary tracking malware, so I got quite hyped when I learned about AsteroidOS on Hacker News today. If nothing, it'd be fun to have an unique watchface :D 2016-06-27 12:01:44 SylvieMobile I'm doubtful I could really do much, but hey, it's worth a try I suppose (is there any guide to installing apps? Couldn't find one) 2016-06-27 12:03:55 @kido the available apps are all installed by default 2016-06-27 12:05:16 @kido I mean, no one developed any other app than the default ones yet :) 2016-06-27 12:05:31 SylvieMobile How would I install a new app if I'd create one, though? Or test improvements to existing apps I might make? 2016-06-27 12:05:59 @kido https://github.com/AsteroidOS/asteroid/wiki/Creating-an-Asteroid-App 2016-06-27 12:07:07 @kido now that we can get SSH to watch we can probably deploy from qt creator 2016-06-27 12:07:10 SylvieMobile Oh, I read that page but didn't realize it was written in "First App", oops 2016-06-27 12:07:13 SylvieMobile My bad 2016-06-27 12:08:12 @kido np :) 2016-06-27 12:15:49 SylvieMobile Well, thanks for the quick replies, hopefully I'll still run into Asara or TheAppleMan soon to get some first-hand opinions 2016-06-27 12:16:52 @kido yes they should be around soon ! 2016-06-27 12:53:13 SylvieMobile I'll be online for another 4 hours or so before I'll come back later under the nick SylvieLorxu and add this to my list of channels to lurk in :P 2016-06-27 12:55:34 @kido alright they will probably HL you 2016-06-27 19:18:21 SylvieLorxu Well, I am officially going to try AsteroidOS on a real device as soon as it arrives :P 2016-06-27 20:51:06 Asara What happened? 2016-06-27 20:51:08 Asara what did i miss? 2016-06-27 20:51:11 Asara OH GOD EVERYTHING IS DIFFERENT 2016-06-27 20:51:54 Asara SylvieLorxu: sup 2016-06-27 20:59:57 SylvieLorxu Asara: Hi. I learned about AsteroidOS today. You use it as a daily driver I've heard? 2016-06-27 21:06:22 Asara yeah pretty much 2016-06-27 21:06:37 SylvieLorxu Mind elaborating on your experience with it? :) 2016-06-27 21:07:34 Asara It works. Look at what exists and what doesn't and go from there 2016-06-27 21:07:41 Asara if you are okay with a pretty minimalistic watch 2016-06-27 21:07:42 Asara then this is great 2016-06-27 21:07:49 Asara if you want a bunch of fancy features then probably not 2016-06-27 21:08:12 Asara I am waiting for someone to develop an analog watchface 2016-06-27 21:08:16 * Asara begs the community :P 2016-06-27 21:08:45 SylvieLorxu Oh, I like minimalistic, so that's great. I definitely like it not being "smart" enough to spy on me :P 2016-06-27 21:09:02 SylvieLorxu Features like "Googlep Now" do nothing but creep me out and bother me :P 2016-06-27 21:09:08 Asara yeap so then this is good 2016-06-27 21:09:15 SylvieLorxu Well great lol 2016-06-27 21:09:27 Asara once I have some time I want to look into getting caldav support into the calender app 2016-06-27 21:09:38 Asara haven't realy looked at the application side of stuff, just the system side of it 2016-06-27 21:11:22 Asara also holy crap just noticed people in here with the M-* prefix, people actually use Matrix thats amazing lol 2016-06-27 21:18:55 SylvieLorxu Adding caldav support will be really hard 2016-06-27 21:19:02 SylvieLorxu I don't think there's any event support even 2016-06-27 21:19:10 SylvieLorxu It's just a basic Qt calendar 2016-06-27 21:21:40 Asara indeed 2016-06-27 21:21:41 Asara :D 2016-06-27 21:48:14 SylvieLorxu What device do you run it on? LG G Watch? 2016-06-27 22:27:55 Asara Urbane 2016-06-27 22:28:19 Asara which we discovered is easier to install to because of its knob 2016-06-27 22:29:48 SylvieLorxu Ah 2016-06-27 22:30:11 SylvieLorxu I don't like the Urbane's design, so I opted for the other one :P 2016-06-27 22:48:52 Asara yeah its not much more difficult 2016-06-27 22:48:55 Asara so its no stress :) 2016-06-27 23:28:42 @kido hi okias ! 2016-06-27 23:28:56 @kido interested in asteroid ? :) 2016-06-27 23:34:38 okias kido: Hi, not at this moment, I sold my smartwatch :D 2016-06-27 23:34:56 okias but in close future, I'll probably buy smart watch without warranty and install Asteroid 2016-06-27 23:35:27 @kido cool ! :) 2016-06-27 23:36:57 @kido http://sdtimes.com/open-source-project-smartwatches-seeks-developer-contributions/ 2016-06-27 23:37:30 @kido AsteroidOS also uses libhybris, which is an open-source solution that commits Hybris. 2016-06-27 23:37:48 @kido Ahah couldn't be clearer :) 2016-06-27 23:56:19 lizzie is there any relationship between asteroid os and gadgetbridge?
